About Bequestly
A Studio Founded on the Belief That Family Records Deserve Care
We started Bequestly because too many families told us the same thing: they had boxes, folders, and cabinets full of important documents — and no clear way to make sense of them together.

How Bequestly Came to Be
Bequestly grew out of a quiet frustration that many families in Penang shared. A relative passes on, or simply grows older, and the family finds itself surrounded by decades of documents — photographs from the 1960s, handwritten letters, land certificates, insurance papers — all stored in ways that made sense once but are now difficult to navigate together.
The people at Bequestly had each seen this in their own families. One of our founders spent three months after her father's passing trying to locate which documents were where, working through boxes that had been packed without a system. Another had helped an elderly neighbour organise a cabinet of mixed papers simply because no one else had the time to sit with her. From these personal experiences, the idea for a studio focused purely on the archival and organisational side of family records took shape.
We opened on Lebuh Pantai in George Town in 2021, beginning with a single briefing session format that we tested with a small group of families. Their response was consistent: they found the process calming, practical, and something they wished had existed sooner. We have refined and expanded what we offer since then, and continue to keep sessions small, unhurried, and grounded in what families actually need — not in any particular outcome beyond clarity and order.
We are not a legal service. We do not offer opinions on wills, asset distribution, or estate matters. What we do is sit with families, work through what they have, and help them put it into a form that is legible, labelled, and maintainable. That, for most families, turns out to be a meaningful thing.

How We Work
Our Approach & Standards
Document Handling Privacy
All documents shared during sessions are handled with discretion. We do not retain copies, photographs, or digital records of personal family documents. What you bring in leaves with you.
Clear Scope, Every Session
At the start of each engagement, we confirm in writing what the session covers and what it does not. There is no ambiguity about our role as an archival and educational service.
Family-Owned Process
All decisions about how records are organised, labelled, and stored remain with the family. We facilitate and suggest structures — families decide what works for them.
Printed Materials Only
Our sessions produce physical outputs — printed sheets, labelled binders, and reference handbooks. We do not create cloud-stored databases or digital services that require ongoing subscriptions.
No Referral Arrangements
We do not have financial arrangements with solicitors, financial planners, or any other professional services. Our only interest is in providing a good archival experience.
Penang Heritage Community Member
Bequestly is a member of the Penang Heritage Community Association, an organisation supporting the preservation and documentation of family and cultural heritage in Penang.
Our Values
Family heritage records represent something that cannot be replaced — the paper trail of a family's life, accumulated over generations. In Penang especially, where family histories often span multiple languages, cultures, and decades, the materials that document those histories are particularly varied and often mixed in with everyday paperwork in ways that can feel overwhelming.
At Bequestly, we have developed a workshop methodology that begins from wherever a family is — a single unsorted box or a room of filing cabinets — and helps them build a reference structure that they can understand and maintain without our ongoing involvement. Our goal is always to leave the family self-sufficient, not dependent on our continued services.
We place particular weight on the family-meeting dimension of heritage record organisation. One of the most consistent findings from our work is that families benefit from a structured occasion to sit together and decide collectively where things should be, who should hold copies of what, and how the archive should be maintained after the programme ends. Our agenda templates are designed to support that kind of conversation without directing it.
Our studio on Lebuh Pantai occupies a quiet shophouse in the heritage core of George Town, a setting that many families find appropriate for this kind of careful work. We keep session sizes small so that each family receives our full attention and the work proceeds at a tempo that feels right for them.
